Disciple. Part 1 – “Follow” - Pastor Mike Stephens
Disciple.

We have been called to be disciples; to follow in the footsteps and teachings of Christ. This series looks at what discipleship means in the life of every Christian as we seek inspiration in Biblical instruction for building relationships that lead to Jesus.

Follow along and fill-in the blanks for greater understanding:

  1. Am I a or a ?

Luke 9:23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself (give up own interests), and take up his cross daily (willing to sacrifice everything), and follow Me (believer vs. follow). 24 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. 25 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost? 26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.

  1. Is really a in my life?

Luke 9:57 Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” 61 And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

  1. Is Jesus a ?

Matthew 13:44 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, 46 who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.

Next Steps:
Answer the question: Am I a believer or a follower?
Honestly list the top three priorities in your life at this very moment. Where does Jesus fall on the list? What is one thing you can do today to make sure Jesus is at the top? Think of a time you clearly saw God

  1. Unchurched people have the .

13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” 14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

  1. we are comes down to we are.

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

  1. The Church is to be a .
  2. Church will not .

Reflection:

  • Whose are you? What does that mean to you?

Romans 10:9 – “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

  • Are you currently swimming forward as a disciple or are you dead in the water?
  • If you aren’t swimming, what do you need to do to change that?

Disciple. Part 3 – “Love”

Disciple. Part 3 – “Love” – Pastor Mike Stephens

Follow along and fill-in the blanks for greater understanding:
1 Peter 4:8 “And above all things have fervent love for one another, for “love will cover a multitude of sins.”

  1. Our lives God.

John 13:31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately. 33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you.

  1. We should like .

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.

“Do not waste your time bothering whether you ‘love’ your neighbor act as if you did. As soon as we do this, we find one of the great secrets. When you are behaving as if you loved someone, you will presently come to love him. If you injure someone you dislike, you will find yourself disliking him more. If you do him a good turn, you will find yourself disliking him less.” ~ C.S. Lewis

  1. Love Christian .

35 By THIS all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

1 Cor. 13 “If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. 2 If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. 3 If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.” (MSG)

Romans 6:23 …but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

1 Peter 2 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.
4. We Christ through .

1 Cor. 15: 1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you RECEIVED and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you BELIEVE in vain. 3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.

John 1 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Ephesians 2 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Reflect

  • Do you believe? Have you received Christ in faith?
  • Who do you know that needs Jesus? A church family?
  • What changes do you need to make to become part of the movement at MtZ to build relationships that lead to Jesus?
